PokeDexter supports all standard Pokémon Showdown formats. This page explains what's available and why certain formats work better for wagered battles.
What is Pokémon Showdown?
Pokémon Showdown is the most popular competitive Pokémon battle simulator. It's:
- Free and browser-based
- Accurate to the official games
- Fast - no waiting for animations (optional)
- Complete - all generations, all Pokémon, all moves
PokeDexter is built on Pokémon Showdown's battle engine, so everything that works there works here.

Format Types
Random Battle (Recommended for Wagering)
How it works:
- Both players receive randomly generated teams
- Teams are balanced for competitive viability
- No team preparation required
Why it's best for wagering:
| Benefit | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Can't throw | You can't intentionally pick bad Pokémon |
| Level playing field | No advantage from team building skill |
| Fast to start | No team selection phase |
| Skill still matters | In-battle decisions determine outcome |
Recommended for: All wagered battles, especially between strangers.
Smogon Tiers
Smogon is the competitive Pokémon community. They organize Pokémon into tiers based on usage:
| Tier | Description | Example Pokémon |
|---|---|---|
| AG | Anything Goes | All Pokémon, all items |
| Ubers | Overpowered legends | Mewtwo, Kyogre, Zacian |
| OU | Overused | Dragapult, Heatran, Landorus |
| UU | Underused | Scizor, Slowking, Hydreigon |
| RU | Rarely Used | Goodra, Florges, Noivern |
| NU | Never Used | Passimian, Heliolisk, Vileplume |
| PU | Partially Used | Sandslash, Haunter, Pelipper |
Usage for wagering:
Consideration: Requires both players to have teams prepared. Good for experienced players who want to showcase team-building skill.
Doubles Formats
2v2 battles where each player has two Pokémon out at once.
| Format | Description |
|---|---|
| Random Doubles | Random teams, doubles rules |
| VGC | Official Video Game Championships format |
| Doubles OU | Smogon doubles tier |
For wagering: Random Doubles works well. VGC requires specific team knowledge.

Why Random Battle for Wagering?
The "Throwing" Problem
In formats where you bring your own team, a bad actor could intentionally lose:
Random Battle solves this:
Skill Expression
Random Battle still rewards skill:
| Skill | How It Matters |
|---|---|
| Prediction | Anticipating opponent's moves |
| Resource management | When to sacrifice, when to preserve HP |
| Type knowledge | Knowing matchups instantly |
| Speed awareness | Who moves first in each situation |
| Risk assessment | When to go aggressive vs. defensive |
Top players win more often in Random Battle, even with "worse" teams.
Speed
| Format | Average Game Time |
|---|---|
| Random Battle | 5-15 minutes |
| OU (full teams) | 15-30 minutes |
| Stall mirrors | 30-60+ minutes |
Faster games = more wagers per session = better for the platform.
